- Courmayeur. Refuge Combal is really nice place to stay (1h walk from last
4
bus stop in Val Veny, it is slightly more expensive when other refuges: 70 EUR
5
for half-board, but much less crowded).
6
* The standard Val Veny track is boring and overcrowded, but the higher track
7
over the Mt. Fortin, etc. is pretty nice (and safe, though heavy back pack is
8
not advised due to steepnes in places). It is the best to go up at Mt. Fortin
9
and go down at Col Youlaz (very steep, but easy to go down). It can be started
10
from Combal and finished at Maison Vielle gondola.
11
* The small valley after Refuge Elissabeta Soldiny is nice but crowded.
12
I guess a round path around Colle Delle Pyramides (starting and returning
13
to the refuge) should be nice. It also seems possible to go to Colle
14
Dell'Estellete (but I was not there, path marked T4) and continue to lacs
15
Joviete and refuge La Balme (probably it is better to start this way).
16
* Finally, the path to Petit Mt. Blanc is starting here. The guide from
17
Courmayeur can be arranged (the dates on the web site are wrong, you need
18
to call and make arrangements)
19
* The higher treks of Val Ferret are recommended by Guide office, but I was
21
* According to Guide office, it is just a hike to Helbronner point. However,
22
in the hot weather it is quite dangerous due to frequent rockfall.
24
* Very popular track from Montevers (train stop) to gondola at plan du Aigulle.
25
A bit overcrowded, but easy ~3h walk (about 300 vertical meters). Crowded.
26
* To lake Carnu and Noir (between gondolas at Planpraz and l'Index). The track
27
is easy and safe, but provides very different environments including 2 small
28
iron-supported sections. It takes about 4h (excluding side trips to lakes) and
30
* There are few small places, like Gorges Diosaz (at Servoz, ~ 100m and 2h) and
31
Cascade de Berard (at Le Buet, ~100m and 1h)
32
* Overall, the Aigules Rouges are pretty nice hiking space. The Moede Anterne
33
lake is exquisite. Upper Diosaz valley is also quite beutiful. There is T2
34
rated hike 3096 high Mt. Buet. However, further route to Switzerland is rated
35
as T5 (i.e. unpassable without rope).
36
The climb from Servoz is quite unspectacular. I'd instead start from La Buet
37
and go to Le Brevent gondola (with overnight stay at Moede Anterne hut).
38
Alternative start(/stop?) place are watterfals at Sixt Fer du Cheval.
39
- Pyrenees (Luchon, Benasque, Viella, Boi/Taull)
40
* Circle de Crabioules (traversing to hut from Maupas) is no problem at all.
41
Non-marked path cutting to the Espringo is fine in a good weather, but could be
42
an issue if wet due to steep descent on the grass. Also would not work in oposite
44
* Portillon to H. Benasque is complex, but passable in good weather (a little bit
45
of snow could be managed but walking sticks will be required). Way up pretty
46
problemless. There is a bit of scramling on the top. Very steep route down from
47
the pass which could be complex if there is some (but not so much or hard) snow.
48
Easy after the pass if the left-most route (across Forca de Remune) is taken.
49
Goes along beutiful river gorge after the Remune pass. One more complex place down
50
the gorge (will be impossible alone with heavy backpack and very dangerous in the
51
wet weather, but probably could be bypassed on the over side of the river - there is
52
only a single such place)
53
* The route to refuge Soula is also difficult if the snow is there, but should
54
be little problem if dry and no snow.
55
* T4 path from Besurta to Cap de Llauset is a nice training on stone hopping,
56
but will take a lot of time as it mostly on the stones (~8 hours).
57
* Tuca de Vallibierna to Pas del Cavall is narrow exposed ridge (rated T6) and
58
likely unpassable without equippment.
63
- Graniga (by Domodossola): Accessible by bus, there is a good hotel serving as
64
starting point. Nice forests treks at lower altitudes and alpine routes higher.
65
The most butiful is a lake country on the other side in Switzerland accessible
66
from refuge Gottascosa. The good end-point is Zwischbergen. There is hostel
67
and bus stop (bus should be reserved 2h in advance). Look trek Alps2012.
68
- Slovakian side of Tatra mountains in the end of September (in the areas
69
of lakes and forests). Strebske pleso and surroundings for instance. The
70
polish side is too overcrowded to enjoy.
71
- Corsica/Corte: Le Tavignano Gorge and return over the mountain tops (to
72
the north of gorge). The gorge is really deep and rocky and views from the
73
tops are nice as well. Probably best in beginning of May which would ensure
74
good temperature on the lower altitudes, white mountains, and a few hikers.
75
- Mallorca: The track for Caimari to Cuber (and further to Soller has kind
76
of Bibleic feeling, but also quite diverse. Part of trail goes over Levada.
77
- Lake country (Lac de la Fare, Lac Blanc Supreore) between Vaujani and Huez
78
(about 1 hour bus drive from Grenoble). Can be done as trek between Vaujani
79
and Huez (preferred) or long round trek starting from Vaujani. Vaujani is
80
serviced by bus from Rochetaille stop (on the way to Bourg d'Osians). This
81
bus is by request only and weekend rides should be requested by Friday noon
88
- Chamonix: Extremely nice trek is on other side of MB group and going to
89
lake Carnu. It is possible to take Gondola to Planpraz (or hike), than go
90
to l'Index and take gondola down. There is quite little climb (~700m),
91
no exposed places, but bits of iron-supported places. Planpratz to l'Index
92
is about 4h, but around lake Carnu a lot of hiking possibilities.
94
- Holzgau: E5 track is pretty boring and overcrowded, but the route from
95
Rossgumpenalp (take left) to Rappenseehuette is pretty nice. There is a
96
bit of exposed rock on the Heilbronner Thoerle (not recommended with
97
heavy back pack, but passable). Hoches Licht is easy to reach.
98
- Reutte/Feussen: There is a big castle by Reutte. Then by train to
99
Musau and stright hike up to Saeulinghaus (not that good). From huette
100
it is 40 minute easy climb to the summit. There is good view on the
101
castles from the top. Then, there is 3 hours easy hike down to castles
106
- Tatra: A polish side has a lot of iron ways. The problem it is extremely
107
overcrowded. Huts must be reserved well in advance (sleeping in the kitchen
108
among 50 other person is always an option). Better to avoid big back pack.
109
a) Track Morskoe Oko -> Rysy is very steep, mostly iron-way (not very
110
complicated and with a lot of people). However, may be a problem in the
112
b) All routes from Schronisko v Doline to Murowaniec requiring a bit of
113
climbing. I gone through Zawrat (the most far away route). The way up is
114
hiking, but there is iron route down. A bit more complicated than Rysy,
115
but also pretty used. I tried to go middle way through Kozia Przelecz, but
116
not gone to the end. The way down should be problem-less in that case,
117
but there is considerable climbing up. Less used.
118
c) The trek on the ridge is very complicated and requires mandatory usage
119
of iron-way cliping system. Not to try alone and without prior training.
